The Facial Nerve Decompression is usually conducted on patients suffering from permanent facial palsy which makes their faced brood down. The facial nerve decompression is caused due to pressure on peripheral nerve which results in nerve impulse block and compression of facial nerve into the bony canal of temporal bone. The procedure is conducted to give a more symmetrical appearance to a patient’s face. This surgery might also help in reducing the symptom of the paralysis as the compression is released from the nerve.

Who conducts the surgery?
The Facial Nerve Decompression surgery is conducted by an ENT Surgeon as it is performed through the mastoid bone which is part of the ear. The surgeon removes the pieces of the mastoid bone to release the pressure from the facial nerve, giving it space to decompress.
What is the procedure?
In order to decompress a facial nerve a surgery would be conducted after examining a patient thoroughly. During the procedure, an incision will be made through a drill parallel to the compressed nerve. The doctors, then, will remove the bone around the compressed nerve with diamond burrs. This will result in relaxation of stress on the facial nerve. The final layer of the compressed bone will also be removed with the use of a hook or fisch nerve dissectors.
What are the complications a patient may face?
Like any other surgery, the facial nerve decompression also has few risks which a patient may face like hear loss, facial nerve injury, headache or meningitis.
