Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus at the time of ovulation. This helps increase the number of sperm that reaches the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chances of conception. IUI gives the sperm a headstart. However, it still requires a sperm to reach the egg and fertilize it.

When to opt for IUI?

IUI is recommended as a fertility treatment in cases of the following conditions:

  • Slight issues in sperm count/motility
  • Ejaculation dysfunction
  • Dysovulation
  • Hostile cervical conditions, including cervical mucus problems
  • Endometriosis
  • Unexplained infertility or when there is donor sperm involved

How is IUI performed?

The IUI procedure lasts only a few minutes and is a painless process involving minimal discomfort. Before the procedure, ovulation stimulating medication may be administered and the patient is routinely monitored to determine when the eggs are mature. The IUI procedure is then planned around the time of ovulation as soon as a surge in LH hormone indicates the occurrence of ovulation. Meanwhile, a semen sample is washed in the lab to separate the healthy sperm from the seminal fluid. A catheter is then used to insert the washed sperm into the uterus. This results in increasing the number of sperm cells in the uterus, thus maximising the chances of conception.
